The SICAM fair in Pordenone, held from October 15 to 18, provided an opportunity to introduce visitors to the start of a new journey together towards achieving the digital product passport.
The new European Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which has just come into effect, introduces ecodesign requirements and minimum standards regarding durability, repairability, energy efficiency, and recycling of goods. It aims to counteract premature obsolescence practices, preventing products from losing functionality due to design features, lack of spare parts, or absence of software updates. Among other aspects, the regulation introduces the digital product passport as a tool for transparency and traceability.
The method that quantifies the environmental impacts of individual products over their entire life cycle is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): this assessment is essential to transparently communicate environmental data, accurately measure impacts, continuously improve production processes, and gain in-depth knowledge of the ecological characteristics of products. These data are then presented in the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration), a document that transparently and reliably communicates a product’s environmental impacts.
“We are committed to supporting client companies that use our MDF and particleboard panels in obtaining the passport for their finished products,” – explains Sales Director Alessandro Fantoni – “We have already conducted the LCA evaluation and obtained the EPD for our particleboard and MDF panels: in this way, we contribute to regulatory compliance while also providing them with a competitive element increasingly demanded by the market.”
